Q&A with Nate Carlson, LVGSL Assistant Commissioner

What does LVGSL mean to you?
LVGSL has truly become a family for me. When I moved to Vegas, I didn’t really know anyone and was longing to play in a softball league here. I’d only played in city men’s and coed leagues before, and had no idea there was such a thing as a gay softball league. Once I joined, I instantly fell in love with it, and how everyone was so accepting. Since that time, I’ve played in numerous tournaments, three GSWSes, and made more friends than I can count, each of whom I’m grateful for.

Who is your favorite athlete and why? I grew up watching the San Francisco Giants suffer in mediocrity for so long that when they drafted a catcher named Buster Posey out of Florida State, I knew he was going to be something special. I followed his career in the minors and was at his first game in the MLB. Little did I know that he would go on to win three World Series championships, Rookie of the Year, MVP, and many more awards. Not only that, he was always playing with grace, was never involved with controversy, and is very easy on the eyes. So Buster Posey, by a long shot, is my favorite athlete.

What is your favorite position to play on the field? First base is my favorite. When you’re 6-foot-6, the other infielders love having a big target to throw at, and it’s fun to make those long stretches to get the runner out by a half-step. But I typically play in the outfield, which is fun because I get to run around, and throwing runners out from the outfield will never get old.

What is your favorite walk-up song? I feel like I need a whole playlist for my walk-up song, just because it depends on my mood. If I’m not playing well, I tend to get in my head, so my song would be “You Need to Calm Down” by Taylor Swift. If I’m feeling good then the chorus from “Without Me” by Eminem or “Big Pimpin” by Jay-Z.
